Marilyn Zizumbo is a senior Environmental Engineering student from Corona, CA. With interests in education, community empowerment, and sustainability, Marilyn is one of our three Resident Assistants (RAs) in the 2022 scholar cohort. Marilyn also serves as a member of the Office of Student Enrichment’s (OSE’s) Student Board and as a student mentor to the 2021-2022 Notre Dame Students Empowering through Engineering Development (NDSEED) team.

Throughout her time on campus, Marilyn has been involved with mentoring high school students with the Matriculate Organization and with cultivating the Latino community on campus. Her sophomore and junior year, Marilyn served on the leadership team for the Latino First-Year Retreat and for Coro Primavera (the Spanish choir on campus). Marilyn also accomplished the goal she set out for herself by serving on the 2020-2021 NDSEED Team as the Cultural Relations Manager. Though she is still a proud member and fierce supporter of her earlier clubs, Marilyn is using her senior year to participate in clubs for the first time such as the ND Jump rope Club!

This past summer, Marilyn stayed in South Bend for an internship with the City of South Bend (CoSB). Piloting a unique internship experience, CoSB partnered with the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Civic Innovation (CCI) to allow Marilyn and her fellow interns the opportunity to receive professional mentorship from CCI while also working in person with the city’s Division of Engineering. At the end of her summer, Marilyn and her team submitted a Neighborhood Traffic Calming Proposal for the City Engineers to consider.

One of Marilyn’s goals post-undergraduate studies is to connect her engineering studies with opportunities to travel abroad to exercise her French (conversational) and Spanish (fluent). Following graduation, Marilyn hopes to continue her professional journey closer to home.

After graduation Marilyn will be a Program Assistant for Engineering Summer Study Abroad in London and will take a full time position at Arcadis in Southern California
