Shaker is a senior majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior with a minor in Compassionate Care in Medicine. He is on the pre-medical track, hoping to begin medical school in the fall of 2024. While Shaker grew up in Indiana, he was born in Syria and can fluently speak Arabic, his first language. His recreational interests range from playing basketball and taking walks to solving the Rubik’s cube and playing chess. He also has a passion for teaching others, whether it be his younger siblings, students from Syria, or students in the South Bend community.

Shaker’s faith is the most important thing to him. As such, he is honored to serve as vice president of the Muslim Student Association on campus. Regarding his career aspirations, Shaker discerned his path to medicine beginning with shadowing, followed by his clinical experiences in hospital and hospice settings. His research pursuits are carried out in the Cognition, Learning, and Development Lab, where he contributes to improving education outcomes in mathematics for young students. His work on a suicide prevention project last summer gave him another outlet to pursue research, this time with a more medically relevant aim. Lastly, Shaker’s work with students from Syria is a testament to his service-oriented heart. After serving as an English tutor, he took on a college essay tutor role. Currently, he serves as a college application mentor, responsible for providing guidance throughout the entire U.S. college application process.
