Artist Talk: Shinique Smith

Artist Shinique Smith, whose work is on view in the exhibition Solidary & Solitary: The Joyner/Giuffrida Collection, will talk about her career. Smith’s work has become well known for its combination of collage elements of found textiles and discarded personal mementos with large gestural brushstrokes, calligraphy, and graffiti marks.

Smith was born in Baltimore, MD, received her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and is currently moving her studio from New York to Los Angeles. She has had recent solo exhibitions at the California African American Museum, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (Nashville, TN), the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum (Lansing, MI), and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among many others. For more information about Shinique Smith visit her website.
