Scholar Selection Process
We know you can have a lot of questions about joining a 4-year, cohort-based scholars program. We'd like to answer some of the most frequently asked questions here, but do not hesitate to email our office for more specific information.
What are the AnBryce Scholars Initiative requirements?
All of our scholars are students who are the first in their families to go to college. These students qualify for the highest University aid and gain admittance to Notre Dame through Early Action or Regular Action application processes. There is no other set requirement, such as major intent or a specific example of leadership. Our scholars are in all Colleges of study and participate fully across clubs, scholastic programs and study abroad opportunities.
Does acceptance affect my financial aid package?
No. Your financial aid package is set and maintained by the Office of Financial Aid.
How long has the AnBryce Scholars Initiative been at Notre Dame?
We admitted our first cohort of scholars in the Spring of 2013. They arrived on campus that fall, and we have had a cohort in every subsequent class at Notre Dame.
How many students do you admit?
We admit 8-10 students for each cohort.
Is there a summer study/internship requirement?
No. We work with students to secure internships, service, and scholastic opportunities, but there is no requirement or schedule of activities. We understand that some of our students will need micro-internships during winter and summer breaks in lieu of summer-long internships, and we have partners in several fields with opportunities for scholars.
Is there an academic class or scholastic requirement?
Yes. All freshmen scholars take their Writing and Rhetoric class together in the Spring of their Freshman year. This class coincides with the Global Immersion trip over Spring Break.
What is the time commitment for an AnBryce Scholar?
Scholars meet monthly for dinner, either in all-scholar or inter-cohort families. Scholars also have 1-2 meetings with the Faculty Director each semester to plan and assess academic trajectories. Scholars also meet with the Associate Director to discuss financial, health, and life needs and with the Education and Outreach Specialist to discuss professional mentorship and summer plans. There also also multiple non-mandatory, but highly informative sessions from partners from all across the University (Study Abroad, Institute for Social Concerns, Career Development, Institute for Global Investing, and multiple Scholarship/Research funding units). AnBryce believes students should have a strong base of support throughout college, but also should find meaningful personal ways to engage with the University (be it in clubs, work study, service, or extra-curricular activities).
Can you be involved in other programs/activities?
Yes, with some exceptions. Many of our scholars are also QuestBridge Scholars. We also have students in the Science and Engineering Scholars bridge program. Our students do SSLP and ISSLP programs through the Institute for Social Concerns. They study abroad both during the academic term and over the summer. Scholars have leadership positions in social, service, and academic clubs and organizations. Our scholars are in the Band. Scholars have work study and athletic management/trainer positions.
